Description

Updated: Now includes print and digital options for the lesson. Perfect for distance learning or the paperless classroom. Interactive student notes, exit ticket, and homework for Google Slides™.

This lesson introduces the third of the major types of bonding – metallic bonding. Most students are aware of the properties of metals. The main concept of this lesson is to provide explanation, at the atomic level, for these properties. The lesson also discusses alloys. Alloys are studied in more depth during the solutions unit. For now, students will explain why alloys are important, and how they are formed. The lesson does not go into the different arrangements in alloys: substitutional, interstitial, or substitutional/interstitial.

Lesson Objectives:

  • Describe the “sea of electrons” model of metallic bonding
  • Explain why metals are good conductors of thermal energy and electricity
  • Explain why metals are malleable and ductile
  • Describe why ionic bonds are not malleable and ductile
  • Explain why metals are shiny

Prior Knowledge:

Atomic Structure and Ionic Bonding
