Students will complete a one page claim, evidence, reasoning (CER) writeup where they will answer the question: Is a burning candle a physical or a chemical change? This assignment requires students to think beyond the "just because" answer and include evidence and reasoning to back up their claims.
This assignment is a great way to give students practice with the important common core standard of arguing from evidence. You can choose to use this assignment as an extra practice sheet, homework, or a writing assessment on physical and chemical changes. You could even make this assignment a laboratory investigation by allowing students to observe a real candle to gather their evidence. Example Answer Key Included!
NGSS Aligned: Analyze and interpret data on the properties of substances before and after the substances interact to determine if a chemical reaction has occurred.
