In this lesson students will learn how to write complete ionic equations and net ionic equations. I know some teachers like to teach this lesson at the end of the reactions unit, and some teach it at the beginning of the redox unit. I like to teach it here because it helps students get a better feel of what is going on in a precipitate double replacement reaction. And when we get to redox reactions, they have already been introduced to net ionic equations.

So, in this lesson, students will not only learn how to write net ionic equations, but they will also develop the basic concept of forming a solution (dissolving), and what is going on at the particle level when an aqueous reaction occurs.
