Do you want chemical weathering to be memorable and real for your students? And need a chance to practice process skills?
This is a great lab to reinforce both chemical weathering but also science process skills such as designing an experiment, writing a procedure, data collection, and measuring. You could easily do part of this (data table or procedures) together to scaffold this, depending on the readiness of your students.
In this lab students design an experiment (conducted in about 10 min) to determine the how weathering rate is affected by temperature and by different strength acids. This is done using common household materials.
chalk, coffee, vinegar, hot plate or heat source, ice cubes, measuring tools (IE ruler, balance, etc).
