In this "Escape Room" type activity, students are started off with a 31 question multiple choice worksheet that they work together to solve. Once done, they use a cryptogram to solve the puzzle and find their next clue. In this activity there are 5 different clues/puzzles they solve, each utilizing chemistry and Acids/Bases/pH information to solve and move on to the next. Students race against another group and the clock to see who can break out of the classroom first and who can beat the clock. All documents can be edited (ExamView software is needed to edit the station 1 worksheet if you do not want to use the PDF copy as is.)
Group size: 5-6 students per group
Time: 50-60 minutes
Materials per group (I did 2 groups):
(I did it so each group had the same materials to solve but their own set, and they were racing each other and the clock.)
6 combo locks
6 bottles to put the labels on for part 2
6 pocket folders
Drawers to put the combo locks on or boxes of some sort
Drain cleaner bottle
You will also need the final combo lock for them to use to Escape the room. The materials/clues for each station are placed around their section of the room, but it is made for them to have to look around a bit to find their next station.
The .zip file contains a PDF copy of the station 1 test/worksheet, a Word document of instructions and printable clues, ExamView file for the station 1 test/worksheet so it can be edited, a "We Escaped" Word document of printable posters for students to hold up and take a picture with if they "escape," and the Excel file for the station 1 cryptogram document.
