Activities in the Chemistry Basics Series are designed for 8th - 12th grade students of Physical Science and Chemistry. The Isotopes Sort activity offers an opportunity for students to use critical thinking skills to identify patterns in the data for the structure of six monatomic isotopes, specifically examining isotope names, isotope symbols, numbers of subatomic particles, and a comparison of average atomic mass and mass number. It works well as an activating strategy or bell ringer for students. It is also an excellent assessment to follow instruction on the structure of isotopes.
The set includes teacher instructions, card sorting activities in both black & white and color versions, instruction cards for students, a student practice sheet, a key in both black & white and color versions, and tips for organizing your card sorts including a binder cover design. All items are ready for you to print and laminate if you choose. The student practice sheet can also be used on its own to explore the six isotopes.
This activity was a great success in my classroom and I hope that it will be in your classroom, too!
