This Card Set was designed to provide an efficient means of covering content associated with the Atomic Structure and how it relates to the Arrangement of the Periodic table for Chemical elements 1-18 (Hydrogen to Argon). I’ve purposely included small visuals on many of the cards, to help with vocabulary comprehension and word association.
How you choose to use the cards is totally up to your discretion, however I’ll list some ways in which I’ve used them in the past. You may also decide whether you’d like to use them “as-is”, or if you’d prefer to copy onto card stock and/or laminate them. If you plan to choose one of the activity ideas from the list below, you will need to cut the cards apart beforehand.
Lesson Activity Ideas (can be done in groups or independently):
*Activity #1: Pull each Element card out of the deck, spread them out, and position face up (Example: Find the card labeled “Carbon”). Skim the deck to locate the other 6 cards that correctly identify characteristics of Carbon -- 7 total cards make a complete group -- There should be 18 total groups upon completion of the activity.
*Activity #2: Pull each Picture card out of the deck. Have the students make observations and organize the picture cards in order (Hydrogen to Argon), based off of their observations.
*Activity #3: Teacher pulls all 18 Element cards out of the deck. Teacher mixes up the remaining cards and passes them out to the students (depending upon the number of students in your class, some may receive 4-5 cards). Teacher orally calls out an Element card. Students then have an assigned period of time to approach the front of the classroom with the card(s) that fit the description of the Element card that was announced. Students explain to the class why their card “fits” the Element that was called.
*** Recommendation: Award points based off of the number of cards that correctly approach the front of the class. For example, 4 of the 6 students that ran up to the front, are correct, then the Class earns 4 points. Keep track of points by class period. Winning class period gets the “prize”.
Students return to their seats and teacher calls out the next Element card.
