Exploration and Intrigue on Ice

Case Summary:
In 1871, the US government sent Charles Francis Hall on a sailing expedition to find the North Pole. The expedition ended disastrously with the sinking of his ship far south of the pole. Half of the crew was abandoned on an ice floe, forced to jump from ice floe to ice floe as weather conditions changed. The other half of the crew made it to land before their boat sunk. Out in the elements, the crew starved and shivered through the winter until they were rescued by passing whaling ships. Quite amazingly, only one man died – the captain, Charles Francis Hall. His death, in the first few months of the expedition, was highly suspicious. Many on the crew thought he had been poisoned, but no one had proof. Students will follow the travelers through the Artic as they learn about electromagnetic radiation, atomic theory, and attempt to discover what really happened to Charles Francis Hall.

Objectives:
1. Understand the electromagnetic spectrum and mathematical relationship between energy, frequency, and wavelengths of light
2. Calculate wavelength, frequency, and energy of light using Planck’s constant and the speed of light
3. Use isotope composition to calculate average atomic mass of an element
4. Understand the experimental design and conclusions used in the development of modern atomic theory, including Dalton’s postulates, Thompson’s discovery of electron properties, Rutherford’s nuclear atom, the Bohr atom, and Chadwick’s discovery of the neutron.
