Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of the changes and properties of matter based upon the composition and behavior of particles of matter. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Part 1: Changes of Matter
• Students investigate a colorful handout illustrating particle behavior during physical and chemical changes. They are asked to determine the difference between the particles in the physical changes and particles in the chemical changes. The students discuss and record their observations.

• Students are shown a list of common indicators of chemical change. They perform two chemical reactions while looking for indicators of chemical change.

• Using shapes to represent atoms, students predict and illustrate several physical and chemical changes.

Part 2: Properties of Matter
• Students investigate a colorful handout illustrating how the measurement or observation of properties of matter affect the particle structure of the substance. They are asked to determine whether observing or measuring various properties results in a change in particle structure.

• Students classify each of the properties on the handout as a physical property or a chemical property based on whether the particle structure of the substance changed when measured or observed.

Part 3: Intensive and Extensive Properties
• Students observe two graduated cylinders containing different amounts of water. The graduated cylinders sit on two scales set to only show the mass of the water samples. Students are asked to record the following physical properties for each sample: mass, volume, color, clarity, and density.

• Students classify each of the observed physical properties as intensive or extensive based on whether the property changed when the amount of water changed.

Student Study Sheet
Students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing all of the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.

Learning Objectives (Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy):
Remembering: Describe the difference between: physical and chemical changes; physical and chemical properties, extensive and intensive physical properties. Recognize indicators of chemical change.
Understanding: Explain the following terms as they relate to changes and properties of matter: particle, atom, physical change, chemical change, state change, precipitate, physical property, chemical property, intensive property, extensive property.
Applying: Classify properties of matter as: physical or chemical; intensive or extensive.
Analyzing: Differentiate between the behavior and structure of particles in: physical and chemical changes; physical and chemical properties. Differentiate between extensive and intensive properties.
Evaluating: Discuss how differences in particle behavior and structure determine whether: a physical or chemical change has occurred; a property is a physical or chemical property.
Creating: Predict and illustrate the particle arrangements that would be expected to occur in various physical and chemical changes.
