Chapter 15: This chapter covers how mixtures and solutions are classified. It moves into the factors that affect solubility, the ways in which the concentration of a solution can be measured and expressed (e.g. molarity and molality) and colligative properties of solutions. An animation is used showing the behavior of water molecules in a beaker at 60oC and the intermolecular forces at work. Students observe how molecular motion slows as the temperature is lowered toward the ice point, so intermolecular forces become more important. This product uses the interactive capabilities of a computer. The chapter has an embedded end-of-chapter quiz, uses graphics, animations, user interactivity or embedded video on almost all pages. This product is designed to provide bite-sized pieces of information in an effort to enhance the scientific literacy of our next generation, not to overwhelm them with sheer quantity of information. Chapter 15 section titles: Classification of Mixtures • Electrolytes and Nonelectrolytes • Suspensions and Colloids • Classification of Solutions • Solubility • Factors Affecting Solubility • Molarity • Molality • Colligative Properties • Freezing and Boiling Points • Solutions Quiz. This product works both on a Macintosh or PC computer.
