Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of the mathematical basis of density. They also reinforce their understanding of scientific notation and significant figures while using the density formula to calculate mass, volume, and density. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

• Students investigate whether the size of a particular substance affects its density. They create a hypothesis and test the hypothesis by calculating the density of three samples of the same substance. They conclude that the density of a substance is always the same regardless of the size.

• Students investigate how changing the mass while maintaining constant volume affects the calculation of density. They create a hypothesis and test the hypothesis by calculating the density of three substances with the same the same volume and different masses. They conclude that increasing the mass while maintaining the volume increases the value of density.

• Students investigate how changing the volume while maintaining constant mass affects the calculation of density. They create a hypothesis and test the hypothesis by calculating the density of three substances with the same the same mass and different volumes. They conclude that increasing the volume while maintaining the mass decreases the value of density.

• Students review how to calculate the density, mass, and volume in a density problem. They then practice multiple density calculations while playing a task card game called “Hazard”. The Hazard game is similar to the task card games Boom and Poison Apple.

Analyzing: Calculate: 1) density, when given mass and volume; 2) mass, when given density and volume; 3) volume, when given density and mass.
Evaluating: Discuss how density can be used to determine the identity of a substance.
