Students mix sand, salt, rocks and water. In the mixing of each substance they answer if it is a heterogeneous mixture, homogeneous mixture and if any part of the mixture could be classified as a solution.
Students then devise a plan to separate the contents given a wire gauze, filter paper/funnel and hot plate. A great lab to discuss separation techniques and relate to phosphate rock mining separation techniques. Background provides notes on several separation techniques.
