The purpose of Formative Assessments are to provide ongoing feedback that can be used by teachers to improve their teaching and by students to improve their learning. They are not used to provide letter grades that affect the students overall class grade, but instead, materials used for formative assessment should:
*help students identify their strengths and weaknesses and target areas that need work in a “low stakes” environment
*help teachers recognize where students are struggling and address problems immediately by modifying teaching and providing individualized instruction.
Chemistry mastery cards are a relaxed formative assessment used to monitor student learning on a smaller scale (Learning Subtargets) to provide students with the opportunity to test their current knowledge and opens up lines of communication with the teacher. Students are better able to vocalize where they are struggling providing more meaningful one-on-one time.
Chemistry mastery quizzes are a more formalized checkpoint that requires students to look at larger concepts (Learning Targets). These are taken in a timed setting and given to the teacher to provide feedback to enhance student learning as well as identify individual and class weaknesses to be addressed.
In this Pack (in both pdf and Word versions):
*Student Answer Sheet when using the mastery cards as flash cards or task cards. This answer sheet may be printed and given to students to place in their notes.
*Student Progress Chart with spaces to record each target and subtarget and the students current level of understanding by date. This can be used not only with the mastery cards but with other activities that relate to the target and subtarget (see preview for example).
*Learning targets and subtargets written as “I can” statements
*10 Mastery Cards (based on the concepts listed below, addressed as Learning Subtargets, see example):
