C.2.G: The student is expected to express and manipulate chemical quantities using scientific conventions and mathematical procedures, including dimensional analysis, scientific notation, and significant figures.
C.8.A: The student is expected to define and use the concept of a mole.
C.8.B: The student is expected to use the mole concept to calculate the number of atoms,… molecules in a sample of material.

Lesson Summary:
These TWO guided inquiry lessons enable students to construct their own understanding of moles and mole conversions. Students also discover how to determine the molar mass of a substance. Mole conversions are performed using dimensional analysis. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Lesson 1: Introduction to Mole Conversions
Part 1: Moles
Students compare the counting units of dozen, gross, and mole.

Part 2: Molar Mass
• Students use an illustrated handout to compare the molar mass and atomic mass of three elements. They discover that the molar mass of an element is equal to its atomic mass.

• Students study a handout illustrating how to calculate the molar mass of a compound. They discover two steps that must be performed when calculating the molar mass.

• Students practice calculating the molar mass of several compounds.

Part 3: Quantities, Units, and Substances
Students practice identifying the quantity, unit, and substance in a given amount.

Part 4: Identifying the Given Amount and the Final Unit
Students practice identifying the given amount and final unit in several mole conversion problems.

Part 5: Conversion Factors
Students discover three ways to write a conversion factor and practice choosing the correct mole conversion factors needed to solve mole conversion problems.

Lesson 2: Mole Conversion Problems
Part 1: Simple Mole Conversions
• Students use a card set and a “two-section” template to learn how to perform unit conversions between moles and grams, moles and liters, moles and molecules, and moles and atoms.

• Students practice performing simple mole conversions. The students may continue to use the card set to help them perform the calculations if needed.

Part 2: Complex Mole Conversions
• Students use a card set and a “three-section” template to learn how to perform unit conversions between grams, liters, molecules, and atoms by first converting to moles.

• Students practice performing complex mole conversions. The students may continue to use the card set to help them perform the calculations if needed.

Task Cards
Students work through a set of task cards to gain additional practice determining the molar mass and performing mole conversions.

Student Study Sheet
Students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.
