Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to be able to construct their own understanding of how to name and write the formulas for multivalent metal compounds and acids. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Multivalent Metal Compounds

Part 1: Naming Multivalent Metal Compounds
• Students observe a table of multivalent metal compound formulas, ion charges, and names. They discover that the Roman Numerals in the compound names indicate the charges of the cations.

• Students use a template to learn how to calculate the charge numbers on cations.

• Students use a chart to practice naming compounds containing multivalent metals.

Part 2: Writing Multivalent Metal Formulas
• Students use a chart to practice writing the formulas of compounds containing multivalent metals. Students should already be familiar with how to write the formulas of main element binary and polyatomic ion compounds.

Acids

Naming Acid Compounds
• Students compare the formulas, anion names, and compound names of several acids. They discover that the name of the acid is determined by the suffix in the anion name.

• Students sort a set of acid formula cards into three groups based on the name of the anion in the formula. Students then practice naming the three groups of acids using the appropriate prefixes and/or suffixes.

Writing Acid Formulas
• Students use a chart to practice identifying anion formulas and writing acid formulas. Students should already be familiar with how to write the formulas of main element binary and polyatomic ion compounds.

Multivalent Metal/Acid Task Cards
Students use task cards to practice naming and writing the formulas for multivalent metal compounds and acids.

Student Study Sheet
Students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing all of the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.

Learning Objectives (Bloom’s Revised Taxonomy):
Remembering: Explain the following terms: multivalent metal, acid formula.
Understanding: Relate the name of the anion in the formula of an acid to the prefixes and/or suffixes used in the acid’s name.
Applying: Write the names of multivalent metal compounds and acids when given the formulas. Write the formulas for multivalent metal compounds and acids when given the names.
Analyzing: Determine the charge numbers of multivalent metals.
Evaluating: Discuss why it is important to determine the charges of multivalent metals when writing the names of multivalent metal compounds. Discuss why it is important to determine the types of anions in acid formulas when writing the names of acid compounds.
