Nomenclature and Formulas: Binary Compounds Lesson
This is a student-centered, active learning lesson without lecture or notetaking!

This lesson presumes a basic understanding of: 1) how to determine if an element is a metal or nonmetal; 2) the meaning of the subscripts in formulas;3) how to determine if a compound is ionic or covalent.

You may want to use the following FREE lesson to teach the concepts listed above, before teaching the Binary Compounds Lesson.

Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of binary ionic and covalent compound nomenclature and formulas. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Ionic Binary Compounds

Part 1: Naming Ionic Binary Compounds
• Students compare the names of elements by themselves and in compounds. They discover that the names of metals do not change in compound names, while the ends of the names of nonmetals change to “ide” in the compound names.

• Students use a chart to help them practice naming ionic compounds from formulas.

Part 2: Writing Ionic Binary Compound Formulas
• Students use cards and a formula template to learn how to write ionic formulas from the charge numbers of elements.

• Students use a chart to help them practice writing ionic formulas from names.

Covalent Binary Compounds

Part 1: Naming Covalent Binary Compounds
• Students compare the names of elements by themselves and in compounds. They discover that the ends of the names of the 1st nonmetals do not change in compound names, while the ends of the names of the 2nd nonmetals change to “ide” in compound names.

• Students compare the number prefixes in the compound names to the subscripts in the formulas. They discover that the number prefixes correspond to the subscripts in the compounds. They also discover that the “mono” prefix is not written with thename of the 1st element.

• Students use a chart to help them practice naming covalent compounds from formulas.

Part 2: Writing Covalent BinaryCompound Formulas
• Students use a chart to help them practice writing covalent formulas from names.

Binary Compound Practice Game
Students practice writing the names and formulas of binary compounds by playing a game.

Student Study Sheet
Students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing all of the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.
