Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of how to perform the following calculations: determination of the percent composition of a compound, determination of the empirical formula of a compound, determination of the molecular formula of a compound. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Part 1: Percent Composition
• Students explore the concept of percent composition by learning to calculate the percent composition by mass of toy blocks. Students then apply the concept of percent composition to a complex molecule. The molecule is illustrated for students and shown in conjunction with each atom’s atomic mass.

• Students practice calculating the percent compositions of a molecules by working through a short set of task cards.

Part 2: Molecular vs Empirical Formulas
• Using illustrations of several molecules, students discover the difference between empirical and molecular formulas.

Part 3: Determining the Empirical Formula
• Students learn the steps to determine the empirical formula of a compound by using a series of visual cues.

• Students practice determining the empirical formulas of compounds by working through a short set of task cards.

Part 4: Determining the Molecular Formula
• Students learn the steps to determine the molecular formula by using a graphic organizer.

• Students practice determining the molecular formulas of compounds by working through a short set of task cards.

Student Study Sheets
Students are provided with student study sheets summarizing all of the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.
