This is a Lego-based activity that I do on the first or second day of my chemistry and general science classes. The goal is to introduce them to the 2 main ideas in chemistry: classification / organization of matter & creation of new compounds / materials from that matter.
I use Ziploc bags filled with an assortment of Lego pieces from my own childhood for the kids to play with and this question sheet to guide their thinking. It also serves for me to get a sense of how each class will work together in lab and focus on learning their names.
There is no math involved and this is probably most appropriate for younger (middle-school) or lower level students. Although, even my most jaded seniors end up having fun also
