Product Description

Being able to prepare solutions is a key skill in applied chemistry courses.

This editable PowerPoint and matching notes page (a Word document) walks students through the method and calculations involved in creating a standard solution (or a stock solution) for a desired molarity. Ideal for pre-teaching the procedure before attempting it in a lab, or reviewing the procedure after a practical activity. The PowerPoint includes a step-by-step solution of a sample problem, and two additional practice problems (answers to the practice problems are included in the PowerPoint notes). The final slide is set for you to enter practice or homework instructions.

Concepts addressed include:

  • the importance of standard solutions
  • the volumetric flask
  • the procedure for creating a standard or stock solution
  • Using c=n/v to determine the number of moles of solute required
  • Using molar mass to determine the mass of solute required

This product was originally created for Ontario's SCH4C, but is also suitable for SCH3U and any other introductory chemistry course.

Please note: the text of both the PowerPoint and the Word document is editable, however, in accordance with their terms of use, the photographs are not. Interested in the photographs? They are available through fotographia by krys.
