Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of stoichiometric calculations. Stoichiometric calculations are performed using dimensional analysis. This lesson assumes that students are familiar with how to calculate molar mass. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Part 1: Identifying Parts of a Stoichiometry Problem
Students practice identifying information on the given and final substances in a stoichiometry problem.

Part 2: Setting up a Stoichiometry Problem
• Students compare the setup of two stoichiometry problems. Each problem is shown “as written” and “in pictures”.

• Students learn how to set up a stoichiometry problem by placing specific items in four boxes.

• Students practice finding critical information in stoichiometry problems and adding the information to the correct setup box.

• Students practice identifying correct and incorrect stoichiometry problem setups.

Part 3: Calculating the Answer to a Stoichiometry Problem
Students practice setting up and calculating the answers to stoichiometry problems.

Task Cards
Students work through a set of task cards to gain additional practice performing stoichiometry calculations.

Student Study Sheet
Students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.
