Lesson Summary:
This guided inquiry lesson enables students to construct their own understanding of how to identify the following types of reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, combustion. Students also discover how to use an activity series to determine whether a single replacement reaction will occur. Students are able to actively learn the material without lecture or note taking.

Part 1: Parts of a Chemical Equation
• Students examine a chart to review and identify the basic parts of a chemical reaction.

Part 2: Types of Chemical Reactions
• Students compare illustrations of prom scenarios with examples of the following types of reactions: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement. Students determine how each prom scenario is similar to a particular type of reaction.

• Students are given a card set illustrating different types of reactions and are asked to sort the cards by reaction type.

Part 3: Single Replacement Reactions and the Activity Series
• Students compare single replacement reactions that occur and those that do not. They are asked to identify the individual element and the element to be replaced in each reaction. By comparing the location of the elements on an activity series, students discover that the reaction will on occcur if the individual element is higher on the activity series.

• Students practice using the activity series to determine whether a single replacement reaction will occur.

Part 4: Combustion Reactions
• Students compare several combustion reactions and determine the types of reactants and products that are always present in a combustion reaction.

Part 5: Identifying Types of Reactions
• Students identify common patterns of elements and compounds in different types of reactions.
Students then use these patterns to classify chemical reactions as: synthesis, decomposition, single replacement, double replacement, or combustion.

Practice
Students practice identifying types of chemical reactions by working through a set of task cards.

Student Study Sheet
Students are provided with a student study sheet summarizing all of the important concepts and vocabulary in this lesson.
