Product Description

Impress your administrator and make lesson planning easy with this fully editable, easy to follow lesson plan that combines unit & daily plans into one document. The comprehensive, yet simple format includes complete content standards, literacy standards, content objectives, language objectives, and key vocabulary. Interactive links are included. For easy identification, SIOP, differentiation, & literacy strategies are embedded and highlighted. This plan lasts 10-12 periods or 4-5 - 90 minute blocks. In this unit, students will learn to:

Performance Standards:

  • Students will use modern atomic theory to explain the characteristics of atoms.
  • Relate light emission and the movement of electrons to element identification.

Literacy Standards:

  • L11-12RST3: Follow precisely a complex multistep procedure when carrying out experiments, taking measurements, or performing technical tasks; analyze the specific results based on explanations in the text.
  • L11-12RST8: Evaluate the hypotheses, data, analysis, and conclusions in a science or technical text, verifying the data when possible and corroborating or challenging conclusions with other sources of information.

Content Objectives (TSWBAT):

  • Compare and contrast the wave and particle models of light.
  • Define quantum energy and explain how it is related to an energy change of matter.
  • Contrast continuous electromagnetic spectra and atomic emission spectra.
  • Compare the Bohr and Quantum Mechanical Model of the atom.
  • Identify the relationships among a hydrogen atom’s energy levels, sublevels, and atomic orbitals.
  • Apply the Pauli Exclusion Principle, the aufbau principle, and Hund’s rule to write electron configurations using orbital diagrams and electron configurations.
  • Define valence electrons and draw electron-dot structures representing an atom’s valence electrons.

Language Objectives:

  • Read, define, and discuss key vocabulary terms: electromagnetic radiation, wavelength, frequency, amplitude, electromagnetic spectrum, quantum, Planck’s constant, photoelectric effect, photon, atomic emission spectrum, ground state, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, quantum mechanical model, atomic orbital, principle quantum number, principle energy level, energy sublevel, electron configuration, aufbau principle, Pauli exclusion principle, Hund’s rule, valence electron, electron-dot structure
  • Listen and write key points discussed in lecture.
  • Calculate, draw, and appropriately color observed wavelengths of atomic emission spectra.
  • Analyze and interpret conclusions based on experimental data gathered from accurate measurement procedures.

Key vocabulary words learned in this unit include: electromagnetic radiation, wavelength, frequency, amplitude, electromagnetic spectrum, quantum, Planck’s constant, photoelectric effect, photon, atomic emission spectrum, ground state, Heisenberg uncertainty principle, quantum mechanical model, atomic orbital, principle quantum number, principle energy level, energy sublevel, electron configuration, aufbau principle, Pauli exclusion principle, Hund’s rule, valence electron, electron-dot structure.
