I wrote this project because I wanted my students to leave my chemistry classroom at the end of the school year with a full understanding that chemistry is fascinating, is important in "real life" every day situations and relates to everything in the world around them! While as chemistry teachers we try to do this all year long I wanted to end the school year driving this message home! This is a project where students choose a topic that they are interested in, generate a question about that topic, and in teams of two prepare a short, interactive lesson to teach to other students. It takes me 4 days for students to complete all of their lessons. They do not stand up in front of the class but instead I have 4-5 student teams teaching at the same time more like a small Science Fair. Students that are not teaching are learning and moving from one lesson to the other throughout the period. This works well and gives the instructor the opportunity to use the scoring guide to evaluate the project lessons. Students love this project and so do I! I learn new things every year from my own students!
