This comprehensive handout comes in a general education and modified format. The modified format is useful for students with special needs as it provides page numbers for the students to reference as well as slightly more straightforward questions. The goal of both versions of the handout is to teach students to read nonfiction text differently than they read fiction - namely, to focus on important details rather than trying to memorize and record every single fact. A loosely written key is available along with two MP4 format videos that provide some visual background and basis for discussion. These same videos are available on YouTube. This particular chapter also has a PowerPoint format presentation that is a valuable visual aid for a discussion about how advertisers market to young people.
Please note: The boxes on the handout are designed for students to type in. If you plan to photocopy the assignment I encourage you to make those spaces larger or reformat slightly.
