This comprehensive handout comes in a general education and modified format. The modified format is useful for students with special needs as it provides page numbers for the students to reference as well as slightly more straightforward questions. The goal of both versions of the handout is to teach students to read nonfiction text differently than they read fiction - namely, to focus on important details rather than trying to memorize and record every single fact. A loosely written key is available along with two MP4 format videos that provide some visual background and basis for discussion.
This chapter includes some additional activities as it is always a student favorite. To begin, there is an additional handout that asks students to revisit the chapter to specifically look for persuasive elements. Secondly, there is a small group discussion documents that encourages students to examine real-world issues facing the meat industry and their own thoughts about it. During this activity students practice good note-taking as well as effective discussion techniques. Finally, there is access to a Wall Street Journal article that will give students exposure to another style of informational text reading and analyzing along with a note-taking sheet.
