This comprehensive handout comes in a general education and modified format. The modified format is useful for students with special needs as it provides page numbers for the students to reference as well as slightly more straightforward questions. The goal of both versions of the handout is to teach students to read nonfiction text differently than they read fiction - namely, to focus on important details rather than trying to memorize and record every single fact. A loosely written key is available along with two MP4 format videos that provide some visual background and basis for discussion. These same videos are available on YouTube. This particular chapter also has a small group video review activity in which students discuss with peers the persuasive techniques used in several included MP4 video files. There is also a graphic about the effects of soda on the human body that works as an excellent bell-ringer activity or discussion basis.
Please note: The handout was originally for use in digital format. If you plan to photocopy the assignment I encourage you to make the spaces in which students need to write larger or reformat slightly.
