This unit is designed around the fun “Chicka-Chicka, Boom, Boom” story that we all know and love. I use it as a word building center. The children will have a cookie sheet and magnetic letters (I have provided cute letters for you if you would prefer to print and use those!) The children choose a coconut that has a CVC word on it and build it on the coconut tree word building mat. I have
also included a response sheet for the children to then “record” the CVC words they have built and draw a picture of it in the box. I have also included another 20 worksheets that work on word building as well as matching the CVC word to the picture!
As a little “extra bonus”, I have included a “Chicka Chicka Boom Boom” chant I use to help the children learn each other’s names at the beginning of the year. (You must put the child’s name and photo on each of the coconuts.) You can also use these “name coconuts” for the children to use to build each other’s names. (I have included “extra palm trees without the letter boxes for
that!) I have even included a photograph to demonstrate how the
children use this unit to build CVC words!
It is common core aligned and covers these standards:
LK.1 I can print my letters.
RF.K.1 I can recognize and name all of my upper and lowercase letters.
RF.K2d I can spell CVC words.
RF.K3b I can say the long and short vowel sounds for the five major vowels.
RF.K3a I can say the sound of each of the letters of the alphabet.
