This activity accompanies the popular book Chicka Chicka Boom Boom and supports CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RF.K.1d Recognize and name all upper-and lowercase letters of the alphabet.
If you want your students to remember and retrieve letter names, the most effective strategy is to engage them with a hands-on, interactive mode of learning. Learning the alphabet with their hands (ASL) is a perfect way to achieve this goal.
Once you’ve taught the ASL alphabet, give each student the sign language sheets and a selection of magnetic letters. Students select a letter and record their findings on the sheet using Do-a-Dot markers (bingo markers). This activity can be differentiated, by providing students with uppercase letters and they have to match upper to upper, then later in the year you can give them lowercase letters.
