This is a set of activities that I used with my newly arrived ESL students. We read a different version of the book each day, watched two different YouTube videos (all book versions and web addresses are listed in the product) and did several comprehension/extension activites.
The activities included in this packet to supplement and reinforce their learning are:
1. Sequencing sentences (pg 2-3): a set of 9 sentences to help students sequence the events of the story and retell it. I print, laminate, and cut a set of sentence strips for each student in the group and then allow them to read and order them on their own.
2. Vocabulary cards (pg 4-5): a set of 12 vocabulary word & definition cards; these can be used many ways but most frequently I use them as a sort activity. I print, laminate, and cut a set of cards for each student in the group. Students then match the definition card to the term.
3. Venn Diagram (pg 6): This can be used to compare any of the versions but I used it to compare the Disney 1943 movie (YouTube) and the Emberleys’ book.
4. Onomatopoeia (pg 7): As you read the Emberleys’ book, there are a lot of onomatopoeia words. These words, including animal sounds, can be hard for ESL students as they are different from language to language. They are also a lot of fun. These flash cards help students match the 8 sounds to the animal/thing that makes it.
5.Synonyms (pg 8-9): The authors use a lot of words to describe the way the animals talk to each other. This is a great opportunity to discuss synonyms. I've included vocabulary cards for 8 of the synonyms used in this book.
