Product Description

In this lesson, students will delve into child labor practices at the turn of the twentieth century to determine the impact of child labor on American society by analyzing primary sources of historical photographs. The lesson begins with a Warm Up activity in which students analyze three historical photographs of children working. After listing details, they see in the images, they answer questions about the photos and write a caption for each photo. Next, pairs complete a photograph sort by matching the 26 photographs with a caption. After pairs are finished, reveal the matching captions and photos. Students then complete a background reading on child labor and answer reading questions. The instructor debriefs the history of child labor as a class by asking questions about what surprised them the most, the types of dangers children faced and the impact of children working. Finally, students complete an acrostic poem using the words, CHILD LABOR.
