Our Students Need to be Globally Aware!
Now more than ever our students need to be knowledgeable about the world around them in order to mature into individuals who are culturally aware and therefore, less likely to stereotype and dehumanize others based on misconceptions.
Globally, there are so many issues our students are not aware of. Perhaps providing them with these facts, however disturbing, will help to sensitize them to other issues they are closely connected to in their own lives such as bullying and racism. Perhaps, being aware will make them more grateful as they are blessed to have what so many others do not.
Making students globally aware should be a priority; one such global issue is child soldiers. My students were understandably shocked.
This PowerPoint will relay the basic introductory information on this issue as the background to Ishmael Beah’s A Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier.
The PowerPoint consists of eighteen slides and has the following information:
♦How Child Soldiers are Drafted
♦Why Use children
♦How Children are Able to Use Military Weapons
♦What the Children Do Daily
The PowerPoint will explain to students the practice of using child soldiers for war. To aid understanding, I have included photos and many subject headings with easy to understand information.
Learning something disheartening may sadden our students but often matures them as well.
