Product Description
This lesson was created to accompany the children's book, "Pedro's Whale" by Paula Kluth and Patrick Schwarz. It is one of five lessons that I designed to incorporate common core standards and simultaneously teach early elementary students about autism and promote the social inclusion of students with autism. Through character analysis, children are able to come to a better understanding of their peers with autism. This particular lesson focuses on fascinations. The other lessons focus on other aspects of autism such as sensory issues, atypical behaviors, varying needs, and friends who are different. Each lesson is a complete lesson plan with objectives, anticipatory sets, guided practice, independent practice, closure, and an optional follow-up activity. The lessons include fun, engaging, and collaborative activities. The books can be easily purchased online or purchased by school sites or districts. The lesson materials are everyday materials you would find in the classroom. These lessons are one part of the easy to use kit, "Children's Literature Kit: Socially Including Students with Autism", designed to teach disability awareness or ability awareness to the primary grades (kindergarten, first grade, and second grade). Each lesson may be purchased for $1.00 each or all five lessons for $2.50. The kit includes a teacher's guide (which can be downloaded for free) with lists of recommended reading for educators and web resources, a list of recommended children's books, tips for how to be a friend with someone with autism, and quick facts about autism for kids. Easily fitting autism awareness lessons into the curriculum was one of the main goals in the development of this kit. Teaching general education students about autism to promote acceptance and friendship was of course another main goal. I am sure that you and your students will enjoy these lessons! - Lynne Dudas
