Description
Introduce this children's story in Spanish to your elementary students with an authentic and engaging cultural lesson about a famous Colombian character: Juan Valdez.
A fictional character who represents the Colombian coffee farmer with his mule Conchita.
It is written in simple, comprehensible Spanish for beginning students. It focuses on the high-frequency verbs: hay, su nombre, su apellido, tiene dice, le da, tiene, es, está. This resource has multiple extension activities for different levels.
The story is written in 3rd person, but I included speech bubbles with 1st person sentences in case you want to teach both.
The Plot: Your students will love this silly and engaging story about Juan Valdez. A coffee farmer who lives in Colombia with his friend, the mule Conchita.
One day Conchita finds a condor named Andes who is hungry. Conchita shares coffee grains with Andes and they get a lot of energy so they decide to help Juan Valdez to finish his job (picking up coffee).
Juan Valdez decides to invite both: Conchita and Andes to his beautiful coffee farm and have a coffee together.
