This is a comprehensive Social Studies/Language Arts China unit,
appropriate for grades 1-3. The beginning of the unit is focused on
geography. Students will look at a variety of China maps, in which students will make inferences that “tell the story” about China, gather all of the inferences to then write a comprehensive paragraph about China’s geography in their own words. Students will make a Big Map, (the template and directions are included), and as students learn new information daily, they can visually show the information on the Big Map. The Big Map will grow in front of the students’ and parents’ eyes! The rest of the unit focuses on places in China, Beijing, Suzhou, Chengdu, Shanghai, and aspects of Chinese culture learned through informative texts and technology. Chengdu will focus on the panda, China’s well-known animal that all students love to learn about. Included is a suggested bibliography that will give students the informative
texts that they need to read and gather information from. Students learn from a variety of sources. Included are technology sites where students can research China’s aspects of culture. There are differentiated Tangram lessons included as well!
