This is a culminating activity that I use after I have introduced my students to many aspects of Chinese culture. The students have several activities to choose from including Ancient China, maps, artifacts, transportation, common life, fashion, food, architecture, people and ideas. The students are allowed to pick activities where their talents will be showcased.
The project has four parts for the students:
--Ancient Dynasties: This part includes maps, drawings, descriptive writing, research, and persuasive writing.
--Life in Ancient China: (Student choice) Graphic organizers, research, writing, timeline, and visual design such as advertisement, catalog page, or home design.
--Vocabulary: game or puzzle design
--Chinese People & Ideas: Writing and research
The intended audience is middle school, but the activities can easily be modified for younger students or made more rigorous for high school students. The students have lots of freedom to create a project to be proud of and display. I've used this several years to commemorate Chinese New Year or to have an academic display as part of our International Fair in the spring.
This file contains:
2.5 page handout for the students - These pages include a table to guide the students throughout each part of the project, a detailed rubric to keep them on track, and a list of 16 vocabulary words covered in previous lessons.
Several pictures of students work - jpeg and most PDF
19 page PowerPoint presentation - This presentation is to aid you in introducing the project. It has pictures and music that will get the students motivated. Each part is broken down into separate slides so that you can discuss your expectation for each part of the project. The students can follow along on their own handout and make notes as needed.
Teaching history is not my forte, but this project makes it easy for the students to learn a lot about another culture although their teacher may be a math person! I learn something new every time I do this project, and the kids love to teach me new things!
