I used these videos to get my middle schoolers excited about preparing for International Fair and Chinese New Year. It was right up their alley! It moved at their pace showing what life in China is like today.
There are four episodes:
Party Games: "The Communist Party is betting big on the Olympic Games in Beijing" This would seem to be dated, but not so fast! It chronicles a little girl's journey to the Olympic gymnastics. The training is very different from ours which creates great discussion between your students. It could also spawn some research or writing exercises.
Getting Rich: "China boasts the fastest growing economy, but who is being left behind?" The ideas for social studies and economics abound!
Food is Heaven: "Faced with increasing pollution, the most populous nation on earth struggles to feed its people." I did activities and discussions to compare and contrast China and the US. For math and geography, we created maps to show population density and graphs to show population growth.
City of Dreams: "Shanghai is the hottest city in China, home to cutting edge culture and new middle class lifestyles." This was good to discuss our daily lives and the daily life in China. The kids were surprised to hear and see how much we are a like!
This is a two disk set at approx. 208 minutes. It is in very good, used condition.
