This book study was created to accompany Chinatown
by William Low. This text would be a great addition to a unit on types of communities or a classroom study of Chinese New Year.
This resource contains:
• Twelve comprehension strips with recording sheets
• Compare and contrast writing prompt
• Descriptive writing prompt
• Postcard writing prompt
• Opinion writing prompt
Graphic organizers as well as writing paper with and without handwriting lines are included for each writing activity. (The five senses graphic organizer can be used for either the descriptive writing prompt or the postcard writing prompt.)
All the activities are designed to help students read for understanding, make connections, and write thoughtfully about the text.
This pack addresses the following Common Core Standards for Grade 1:
*RL.1.1: Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
*RL.1.3: Describe characters, settings, and major events in a story, using key details.
*RL.1.9: Compare and contrast the adventures and experiences of characters in stories.
*RF.1.4a: Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
This pack addresses the following Common Core Standards for Grade 2:
*RL.2.1: Ask and answer such questions as who, what, where, when, why, and how to demonstrate understanding of key details in a text.
*RL.2.7: Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
*RF.2.4a: Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
This pack addresses the following Common Core Standards for Grade 3:
*RL.3.1: Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers.
*RF.3.4a: Read grade-level text with purpose and understanding.
