This assessment task is suitable for students in years 6-8 who have read and discussed 'Chinese Cinderella' by Adeline Yen Mah. It asks students to research an aspect or story from their family history and relate it to a theme from the text, such as sibling rivalry, overcoming adversity, migration.
The task engages students in a topic of great interest to them, their family history. This personal relevance drives deeper analysis and thinking about the author's experiences and how she expresses them. It emphasises analysis and making connections rather than recounting. The task also provides an opportunity for students who are first encountering secondary-standard oral presentations to talk on a subject they are comfortable with.
The assessment criteria provided are derived from the IB Middle Years Program, and can be easily adapted.
