Do you have students who rely on the appearance of an unfamiliar word and try sounding it out only to lose the intended meaning of the text altogether? This activity is good for teaching students how to use context clues to determine the meaning/synonym of an unknown/unfamiliar word. I have each student write her/his own modified cloze reading passage by substituting challenging words for Chinese characters instead of blanks. Then, the other students have to determine what words could go in each spot based on the context clues. Essentially, you will get a cloze reading assessment from every student who completes this activity, and then they can take one another's assessments to practice using context clues. The first page has the directions, and the last two pages has an example of what to do.
