This resource features a one page reading on the American Senator George Frisbie Hoar. Hoar was famous for his devotion to racial equality, civil rights, and labor rights in the late 1800's. He staunchly opposed the Chinese Exclusion Act and gave a famous speech in 1882 denouncing the bill.
I love to use this with my classes to show that not all Congressmen were the same and, just like today, there were debates over controversial bills. They also always get a kick out of his name - I've had quite a few students do further research on him because of this activity!
Following the reading is a set of 8 Common Core-aligned comprehension questions that help gauge students' understanding. An answer key for this is provided for your convenience.
