Chinese Exclusion Act | Chinese Immigration | Immigration Laws | History Inquiry |

History curriculum and teaching is shifting towards a focus on historical inquiry.

Historical inquiry lessons task students with learning about and forming opinions on historical events, places, and people. This is in contrast to a traditional history lesson in which the teacher directly delivers the historical information to the students, and the teacher’s word is considered as historical fact.

This inquiry lesson asks students to form an opinion on why America passed the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act. It is presented to them as a “detective mystery” where they are analyzing clues and data to solve the case. The lesson is scaffolded so that students form multiple hypothesis before coming to their final conclusions.

Students will need access to the internet on a device to complete this inquiry lesson. All links that students need are provided in the student handout. The first link takes them to the head of the detective department who charges them with their task:

“Detective, I’m glad you’re here. We have an important case that’s come in, and you’re the best one on the force to tackle it. Your task is to figure out the answer to this crucial question – why did America pass the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act? You’ll be looking at a series of clues to unravel the case and solve the mystery. Don’t let me down, detective. Our department is counting on you!”
