Students analyze 2 different primary sources, one from a white man and one a Chinese man, who have different opinions about why America passed the Chinese Exclusion Act in the 1880's. After marking the text and completing an organizer, students are asked to provide a thesis statement and a structured body paragraph using 2 quotes from the documents. I find this to be an excellent way to work with primary sources and practice writing in a quick and efficient fashion. Depending on the level of your class, this could take 45-90 minutes. It is also quick to grade (especially if you choose to eliminate the final writing component).
