Discover Chinese instruments in this GarageBand for iPad project which includes a step-by-step video walkthrough that you can show students in class. Students will learn about traditional Chinese instruments including the Erhu and Guzheng. They will play a Chinese lullaby arrangement and then compose and record their own lullaby in GarageBand.

This unit of work is structured as follows:

  • Lesson 1: Discover and explore Chinese instruments: the Erhu and Guzheng
  • Lesson 2: Improvise using provided rhythmic motifs and the pentatonic scale and play a Chinese Lullaby arrangement
  • Lesson 3+: Compose your own Chinese lullaby in GarageBand on the iPad

The main part of this lesson is the GarageBand composition task which involves composing a lullaby with a pedal note and a pentatonic melody.  It would make a perfect Chinese New Year project or world music activity..

Teacher and student videos: step-by-step walkthroughs!

Two videos have been included in this project:

  • Student video
  • Teacher tips video

The student video shows me walking through the project step-by-step in GarageBand. It has been designed for you to play for students in class, freeing you up to move around and help to individual students.  Students will be able to see the GarageBand screen and follow along each step. You can pause the video if they need a little extra time along the way. The video could be used during a substitute lesson, as a station or center and can allow for differentiation in your class.  It’s also perfect if you’re not confident running music tech lessons yourself!

The teacher video provides some background and tips on running this unit of work.
