Want to introduce your students to the history and customs behind a holiday that is celebrated by more than 1.3 billion people each year? The Chinese New Year is a great opportunity to teach students about the traditions of China, as well as bring current events into the Global History classroom. This lesson bundle includes a PowerPoint and note packet (both doc and pdf format, so you may edit as you wish). The video link is included in the 2nd slide of notes for the PowerPoint. What I also like to do at the end of the lesson is have students break open a fortune cookie which leads us into the discussion of how this Chinese-American custom was a blending of the traditions immigrants brought with them to the United States. As a closing activity, I also like to have students write their own fortunes for fortune cookies of the future.
