This Chinese New Year Math and Literacy Unit is the single best resource for introducing Chinese New Year to students ages preK through first grade.

A wide range of activities that cultivate students' math, reading, listening, writing, and critical thinking skills are seamlessly woven into culturally authentic activities, making this one packet you don't want to miss! Beautiful illustrations based on real world experience and specifically created for our unique unit will keep students engaged and excited about each lesson.

Vocabulary Cards for Pocket Chart ~ Display and introduce the vocabulary from the lesson in your pocket chart, and keep it up throughout the lessons for reference.

Count the Spring Blossoms by Tens ~ Each of the vases hold stems that have 10 blossoms each. Students will count by tens to identify how many blossoms are in each vase.

Chinese New Year Scramble ~ Students will look for and count different symbols of Chinese New Year and write the quantities in the boxes. They can also color the pictures.

Counting Lanterns ~ Students will count the lanterns in each group, and determine which set is larger. In the box, they will write < > or =.

Color the Lion Dancer with Math ~ Students will solve addition and subtraction problems within 0-5, and then will color sections of a lion dancer drawing based on the color-coded key.

Connect the Dots to Make a Ram ~ Connect the dots in alphabetical order, first with lower case and then upper case, to make a ram.

Lantern Maze ~ Students make their way through the Chinese Lantern Maze!

Interactive, Teacher-Led Reading with Listening Comprehension Questions ~ This original story about Chinese New Year is intended to be read aloud. The teacher leads a large group, class discussion following the comprehension questions provided (there are both pre-reading and post-reading questions). Teachers have the option of using the provided list of props for an interactive experience. After handing out the props to the students, they must listen to the story and stand up when their item is mentioned.

Emergent Reader Text and Illustration Activity ~ First, the teacher reads the original story aloud to the students (see above). For this follow-up activity, students read summarizing sentences from the story, and illustrate them within the boxes.

Handwriting Practice Chinese New Year Minibook ~ Students first trace, then write several important elements of Chinese New Year. Next, they color the realistic illustrations. Teachers may use these sheets separately, or staple them together to make a culturally authentic minibook.

Craftivity: Make a Lantern ~ Students will follow the template to make their own Chinese Lantern. I like to print the templates on 11x17 inch red construction paper, and leave out gold and black stamps, markers, and glitter for the students to use to decorate them. White paper can also be used.

Craftivity: Make an Envelope ~ Students will follow the template to make their own red envelope. I prefer to use 8x10 red construction paper for this project, and again leave out gold and black stamps, markers, and glitter for the students to use to decorate them. White paper can also be used. Also, it is fun to offer the children a chocolate “gold coin” to put inside to take home!

Coloring Sheets ~ Students can color themed sheets: Lantern, Lion Dancer, Rooster.
