I adapted a Chinese New Year story and simplified ti to fit the needs of my students. I chose a few of the vocabulary from there and developed an activity to help my students build their vocabulary. It is also possible for teachers to circle words in the story that have synonyms and have students find the correct synonym (optional additional activity). I will also add a jigsaw page related to the reading as well.
For this task, students read a section (multiple headings are in the story and I gave one student one to two headings). They read their section and identified two to three really important information they had to share about their reading to their partner. They wrote this down on the "jigsaw" page. After each student filled out their jigsaw section, they got together and shared what they learned. By the end of the session, everyone's jigsaw page was full of notes about each of the sections, although they only read one section.
