This lesson plan and student handouts include:
* Learning objectives
* Teacher instructions
* 3 readings to use for a jigsaw learning activity on Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism (note: there is no reading for Buddhism)
* 20 statements to be sorted into the correct philosophy
* Student chart
* Student handout with quotes from each of the philosophies
* Teacher key for the sorting activity
In this lesson, students are asked to examine the quotes on the journal prompt page and select the one that they like best. Each quote is connected to one of the four philosophies. Students should be divided up into groups and silently read one of the three articles on Confucianism, Daoism, and Legalism. Once they finish, with group members they will be given slips of paper statements. They should organize them into 4 categories: Buddhism, Confucianism, Daoism, Legalism. Finally, students should respond to the exit slip question and the two learning objectives as a form of self-assessment. A teacher key for the sorting activity is included.
Students love this hands-on activity. It is a fun way to help students understand the basic beliefs and traditions of the philosophies and also find quotes that apply to their lives.
