Many teachers infuse a literacy component into their cooking activities by presenting the printed steps on a large flip chart. Bloom creatively expands upon this frequent practice by using PowerPoint software to not only present the printed steps but to make those steps ‘come alive’ by using the animation and sound capabilities of PowerPoint software. Teachers are encouraged to view the text as a series of ‘teachable moments’ that can be tailored to highlight current literacy needs. In addition, many early math concepts (e.g., number identification, counting, subtraction, fractions) can be easily incorporated into the lesson. The file is intended for use on an interactive whiteboard, but can be displayed on a laptop for small group activities. Both regular and special education classrooms can benefit from this resource.
This PowerPoint Show file consistes of two sections: What we need (listing the ingredients) …. and What we need to do (presenting the steps, one per page). Every step has been broken down into smaller components, each with a corresponding animation and sound effect. Animations are designed to facilitate comprehension and reward the reading process. Stars have been inserted into the text to indicate where and when an animation should be inserted. Student engagement is typically high when using this resource. Children are periodically called upon to trigger an animation or advance the page. This can be achieved directly by approaching and tapping the interactive whiteboard or it can be achieved remotely using a switch interface (e.g., wireless bluetooth or infrared).
When the activity is conducted in a preschool or kindergarten classroom, the file is used to pace the class through the shared cooking activity, e.g. read together… animate …. then perform the real life step.
When the activity is conducted in a Grade 1 or 2 classroom, the teacher may opt to conduct the lesson across two consecutive days. On day 1 the teacher previews the recipe as an indepth literacy activity, then conducts the actual cooking activity as an expressive language activity on Day 2. This strategy is especially useful for speech language pathologists working with students with Complex Communication Needs, using augmentative and alternative communication. This resource is especially useful for providing a student with numerous opportunities to practice switch use. This can be achieved by connecting the child’s switch directly (e.g. Switch Interface Pro) or wirelessly to the interactive whiteboard computer (e.g. Bluetooth2).
