A fun hands-on activity where students simulate mining “coal” chocolate chips from cookies! Directions and procedure are completely described to run the activity. There is good integrated math in this activity, as students calculate the costs associated with mining which includes fines for environmental damage. At the end, students calculate net profits (or loss).
This resource also offers document camera notes and images on coal: simply print and use. When students finish, they can work on the provided activity worksheet.
