This bundle includes the three lesson plans (all with National Core Art Standards), a rubric, and supporting material to help students learn about five different Black American artists throughout recent history. The unit begins with a stationed activity where students learn about artists, Kara Walker, Faith Ringgold, Kerry James Marshall, Romare Bearden, and Jacob Lawrence. The unit continues into a choice based art making activity, where students are able to pick which artist's medium they want to try when creating their own artworks. Following the art making activity, students participate in a group critique and complete an artist statement reflecting on their learnings. While this unit is geared towards grades 3-5, adaptions can be made for younger and older students.
This bundle is great for teachers looking for a meaningful art making experience. This unit allows students to learn about several artist, including their style, medium, and inspiration. Students are then given a choice of how they want to create their own meaningful artwork in response to their learnings. The end results are great for displaying around the school, showing off students creation of their personal experiences!
Throughout this unit students are analyzing artwork, using their knowledge of different mediums, styles, and art vocabulary. Students will be collaborating throughout the learning process and ultimately partaking in a truly meaningful art experience.
Differentiation of this unit can be done by providing visual step by step directions for students. Similarly, students with special learning needs, can be provided the artist workbooks at a fixed station rather than moving around from station to station. This unit provides multiple opportunities for students to succeed in their learning experiences.
